Player Talent Scout: Tanguy Kouassi

Posted on 19th February 2020

Tanguy Nianzou Kouassi is a 17 year-old central defender who has started to break into the Paris Saint-Germain first team. He made headlines at the weekend when he scored twice against Amiens in PSG’s 4-4 draw.

Kouassi was a key player for the France squad that earned third place at the 2019 Under-17 World Cup, and his performances for PSG’s youth sides have seen him fast tracked into Thomas Tuchel’s squad this season.

Born in Paris, Kouassi made his professional debut for his hometown club in the Coupe de la Ligue against Le Mans in November 2019, and his league and Champions League debuts followed shortly after in December.

Kouassi has made 11 appearances in total which is very impressive when you consider the all star squad that PSG can choose from. Kouassi is 188cm, and this allows him to be very strong in the air, and he is also strong and quick.

Despite his physicality, Kouassi is also an elegant and composed centre-back who likes to step out of defence and break lines through his passing, making him the ideal modern day central defender.

PSG have made a habit of selling their brightest academy graduates in recent seasons, but Kouassi looks like he has the potential to become one of the best defenders in Europe, and PSG would be wise to continue to integrate him into the squad where he can learn from the likes of Thiago Silva and Marquinhos and develop into a regular starter at Parc des Princes.
