Letting go in the Transfer Market
August 23rd, 2008 by SM Dev (Ste)
Fellow Soccer Manager’s, I have been playing the game for nearly a year, managing a variety of squads and recently had a staggering revelation when discussing player transfers with a fellow manager. I suffer from player attachment syndrome (PAS).
Frankly it shocked me, mostly because I’ve stayed in denial about my PAS.
It finally smacked me in the head when I realized that my biggest hurdle in the game is swinging deals. I build my squads for depth so that I can compete and have a shot to win not jus the leagues I’m in, but the cups and shields that are also a part of the seasons. I like to have options in which I can play and what formations I can send out, even with 40-man roster limits.
But onto the problem. I find it hard to let go of players in deals, and I’m not talking about the Fabregas’, Kaka’s and Ronaldo’s of the game. I’m talking about the Pablo Zabaleta’s, Mathieu Bodmer’s, and Nicolas Burdisso’s of the world. Good players, but difference makers in winning titles? I think not.
I’m even constrained by my youth players who won’t conceivably help me for two years, even using the best crystal ball predictions from the SM forum.
I believe I was spoiled early on in my SM career. One of my first deals was a two for one in which I gave up a 94-rated player for a 92- and 91-rated player, each younger than who I gave up. A few weeks later the player I let go went down in rating and my new 92 became a 93. Now in every deal I do, I’m looking to “win” it like this one.
My PAS is taking over and controlling my transfer life. I’m being held hostage by my inability to let go of players. This has become more than just looking at a deal from every angle, this is becoming a detriment to my teams if I can’t shake up a mediocre season.
Am I the only one suffering from PAS? Are there any remedies for this condition and letting the transfers fly? Please let me know. My squads and transfer life have suffered long enough.

I am also the same, although i often make counter-offers for deals with youngsters so i can keep them if i do let players go, however Samir Nasri in one of my teams has been the subject of many offers, one of which was i think 65m + alexandre pato + john heitinga i did not accept however, i also was spoiled at the start of my soccer manager career in a way but not due to deals when i have sold, when i took charge of my second club atletico madrid, many young talents were with unmanaged clubs, ,most notably joao moutinho karim benzema and nasri, it also helped tht once i sold players i didnt want or need, i had in excess of 100m, nasri has since increased to 92, benzema to 93 and aguero (already with the club) to 93. also i have an obsession with very young talent, and ever since i joined soccer manager, have been buying 16,17 and 18 year olds with ratings of 70-odd. i struggle to let go of players but this is probably because i have put in effort to have the players i have purchased and gained in deals, like you said

i did this very early on,but realising in the end that buying the henrys tottis, or ,marquezs of this world they may drop a point, but will in a lot of leagues do consistently well, ive just sold joe cole ,plus kuranyi for aguero saying that lol,but i have got the 3 mentioned players on my team and its pushing me up, u have to let go as part exchange sum times to sweeten a deal, especially for non experienced managers,i have started letting go of a lot of youth, because iv’e brought well, and it gives me more money for future buys,if u can sell 3 youth players,( apart from the bojans of this world) then raising the money to buy torres or gerrard ,it will help u get over PAS,

This is a game a good game ,but still a game theres no point in crying over PAS if u do…..you are sad and need to get a life

I often find myself holding onto players. When I took charge of my Shakhtar Donetsk team, it had 1 player of 90 or above (Deivson Bobo). I had a look round the unmanaged teams and I got Vagner Love. I had many offers for him but never let him go until I managed to get Kanoute in exchange. I’m a Man Utd supporter and recently got Possebon and Rafael because they will be quality players. Only 75 and 74 in rating, but I doubt I’ll ever sell them. I have PAS.

7. Steve Leketson | August 23rd, 2008 at 5:15 pm
No not really. if i get a offer for a player then i will sell him as long as the offer is good.
if i want to buy a player and then i exchange a player less in rating than the one i want.
lighten up you fools. its just a bloody game.

This is the sort of blog contribution SM must love as they don’t want people hoarding players and want the transfer market to be busy, and buying up all the youth and having massive squads makes the game look bad from an outsider’s perspective.
Having said that, planning for the future is the best way of ensuring long term success. 99% of managers who trade purely on current rating are utterly clueless and will have the team to prove it in a few seasons.
If you’re a casual player then yes, short term success will come if you are prepared to trade out your fringe youth for more established players.

i had trouble and i still haven’t got rid of them , i’m talking about bodmer and maniche cause the last two seasons they where my best average performers and this season they have done really badly, even in the first cup game against the league 4 teams, i even have the option of selling and getting robinho for cheap and haven’t done it yet.

I have no problems about holding on to players, its friggin BUYING players that’s my problem! I took over Ajax six months ago and still havent bought a single player yet cause nobody will sell!!!
11. Louis | August 23rd, 2008 at 7:42 pm
I find that’s also a problem. The thing which really annoys me is when you see that a manager has signed in after you have made a bid, and they leave it. They don’t bother responding.

i keep the small names but let the big names go. such as i sold ronaldo for 25m gerrard and keane, as it made my first team rating go up. i only sell my good players if it makes my first team better.

i am the same but if you want to stop get a really good deal for yourself so you can say you have conned the buyer into paying more than neccesary, then you can go on the transfer market and buy young, quality players for cheaper if the buyer doesn’t have the type of player you are looking for, and remmeber they want the player so you decide what the price is for him.
15. AK | August 24th, 2008 at 8:46 pm
The problem isn’t that 1 person on their own has PAS, it’s that everyone has it and no-one is willing to sell the top quality players that they get because it’s too difficult to replace them with other quality, the only other option is to buy younger players who are good enough to play in the first team, but most people won’t sell these players either!

Relax people, its just a game -.-

i have a good team in barcelona. i sell players everyday. over 6-10Mill over chairmans value. this is just mindless entertainment, not a job, not ur life, so its pretty easy to sell and buy for me anyway.
if u want to buy players, look for me. i will sell. i got aguero for 12Mill ages ago. i will sell him for 30Mill.

its good to build up a youth team with smaller names that might become good players in the futre but for my norwich team my average age is about 33 but i won league 2 and got promoted to the prem then came 6th! trading your good players for better is good but you need a good bench and a few reserves cos injurys and suspensions will hurt small teams.
If you get good old players they wil do the job and i have cannavaro and a big club offered about 20m and a few players but i rejected cos 20m isnt enough to buy more quality for u.
SO only sell if you can replace well!

i have finally realised that if you buy a team like mine where every body is above 94 youre team seems to draw and lose quite a bit i had an average rating of 95 and lost 2-0 to vissel kobe can any 1 tell me if im right or not cos if im right should i down grade my squad and get rid of my ronaldos xavi s torres eto etc
20. Ali | August 26th, 2008 at 1:31 am
I agree with Declan. If I had a team with an average rating of 94 or 95, i would usually lose or scrape out wins. But teams like Roma, Schalke 04, PSV, Ajax etc, seem to win lots of matches.
It does make sense since, All of your players wil be the best and won’t be able to play well as a team, but i dont expect to have a squad with players average 95, SM value of 9.5 mil, and Lose to an away team two divisions lower than me 2-0. I mean upsets are very good, but sometimes the SM scores can be VERY unrealistic.
21. DAz EvaNs | August 26th, 2008 at 9:34 am
i agree agen with the 2 above i hav a man u team wich average rating is 96 and i lost 2-0 to shrewsbury in the cup and they havent had a manager i dont think and they defo dont have any good players!
but ive noticed you need all your players the same rating near enough cos if you have a team of 85’s then put just sum1 like totti who is 96 he normally performs at about 5 each game..
22. Garrett Lyons | August 26th, 2008 at 9:23 pm
I found that the players like Zabaleta and Bodmer were in fact difference makers to me.
I picked Bodmer up off the transfer list for my Juventus side. He started in my central midfield and has outperformed players rated just one spot below him over a comparative span of minutes. My side is top of the tables by 3 pts. with one game to play and is up 6 goals over the 2nd place team in GD.
Anyhow, my point is that while there has to be a time where you get rid of some players, there are times where the lesser known players are just what a team needs to push it over the top.

Im new to this and as i go on im learning to get new playes, some young and some sensational. Big names like ronaldo and so on but i have to make olayers better thats why i like picking younger players so then i can give them an opputunity. And also man u is a great team to manage.
24. llol | January 16th, 2009 at 9:37 am
Dude you need to learn to let go. I sold Tevez, Adebayor, Toure, Gallas and Flamini and got cash to buy young players like HIguain, benzema, etc. Now it’s finally working and I’m so proud that the team i built myself is winning games week in week out.
25. paul | May 9th, 2009 at 3:33 pm
i sold ronaldiniho pepe and got u hlguain, benzema etc

i think people are too tight in selling players. eg. i am liverpool and the previous manager swapped gerrard to milan. i recently put in a bid of 70million plus flamini and jaaskelainen but it was rejected saying that the team wanted more for the player which just shows how some players can be really greedy which shows how this game can be very awkward for settling transfer deals, especcially if you are a big team like barcelona or man. u and you try to sign players rated 95+ people will only accept an amount like 50-80million. i just think that there should be a maximum total value for each player.
