Player Ratings: Champions League Final 1994

December 6th, 2008 by SM Dev (Ste)

On the 18th May, 1994, two giants of European football clashed at the Athens Olympic Stadium in Athens, Greece.

The final is remembered not just for the surprising scoreline (4-0 to AC Milan) but for the fantastic quality of an attacking master class by the Milanese.

AC Milan, went into the game minus suspended defenders, Franco Baresi and Bruno Costacurta as well as long term injury Michael Van Basten, a two-time World Player of the Year.

The starting XI for each team:

The Catalans were heavily fancied and so it came as a great shock not just to lose, but in such emphatic fashion, by what is still the biggest margin of a defeat in a Champions League final.

The question is though is what rating would you have given each player if SM was around at the time of the 1994 Champions League final?

Well, Maldini would of had a high rating then, maybe 94 touching 95?
Marcel Desailly would of been at least 92 - 93?
Sergi of Barcelona was a quality player, would give him a rating of at least 93.
Roberto Donadoni and Christian Panucci would be a 92 - 93 rating maybe?

I think Maldini would have been possibly a 96 as he was in his prime at 26 (possibly a 95 if you wait for Italy’s World Cup Final appearance)

Desailly was at his best in Milan so i would have him at a 94, Albertini was also a rock so 95 for him.

Overall though, ratings for Barca would be higher as they were deemed to be untouchable at the time. The fearsome strike partnership of Stoichkov (96) and Romario (98) backed up by a rock defence of Nadal (93) and Koeman (31 yo but 94).

Would this not have been more fun if the SM rating people had done their own ratings for the players and we discussed it lol because i know alot of kids on here are too young to even remember alot of those players.

I mean i’m a Milan fan and i’m 20 but i cannot even remember back then.

  • 10. Stewart  |  December 6th, 2008 at 8:54 pm

  • 11. jamie  |  December 6th, 2008 at 9:25 pm

    romario,maldini and Stoichkov all 97 98 ish the rest 93 +

  • 12. Ben Palmer  |  December 7th, 2008 at 1:20 am

Only thing i think that marks Desailly down is France being in poor run of form at that time (ie no WC94).

Spain weren’t at their best also at that time either so maybe lower the Barca Spaniards’ ratings slightly.

i think they should make a setup that contains all the old player and they should be rated at they best
so that way you could have a team wth pele and alan shearer
with goldon banks in goal would be amazing
    think bout it sm !!!!!!!!!!!!

I was 6 years old when this game was played. But my father always reminded me about this great game by showing me footage of it.

  • 23. stuart munn  |  December 8th, 2008 at 5:07 am

You can’t compare. How could you imagine a rooney working all day and training 4 nights a week. Pele was one of/the best of his day. Today players are almost football machines. You can’t compare! Still, the character shown by players of old is monumental by comparison to today’s game simply because of necessity.

  • 24. Terry Bates  |  December 8th, 2008 at 7:54 pm

Shearer would have been rated 96 or 97

  • 25. George  |  December 8th, 2008 at 10:22 pm

What does anyone think cantona would be? Thinking he didn’t have much of and international carrer. i would say 95+

  • 26. Torres999  |  December 11th, 2008 at 1:44 pm

Cantona no more than a 94 due to an almost non existent and unsuccessful international career. Its also worth pointing out he was pretty poor in European competition as well.

I think 94 in his prime although I’m sure many a United fan woudl have rated him higher lol.
