Gold Championships: SMFA Cup - America v Europe

December 10th, 2008 by SM Dev (Ste)

Last Friday Mexican club UNAM lifted the prestigious SMFA Cup by beating Borussia Dortmund in the final within Gold Championship 7, and the Pumas became only the second ever non-European club to win the tournament (the list of winners can be found within this link).

Does this mean that it is harder to lift the prestigious SMFA Cup if you are a non-European club?

Lets have a look at the winners from each respective national league:

America (2 winners)

  • São Paulo
  • UNAM

England (10 winners)

  • Arsenal
  • Chelsea
  • Liverpool x2
  • Manchester United x4
  • Newcastle
  • Tottenham Hotspur

Flag of France France (1 winner)

  • Lyon

Flag of Germany Germany (5 winners)

  • 1FC Nurnberg
  • Bayern Munchen x2
  • Hertha BSC x2

Flag of Italy Italy (12 winners)

  • Internazionale x8
  • Juventus
  • Milan
  • Roma x2

Mediterranean (1 winner)

  • Sporting

Flag of the Netherlands/Flag of Belgium Netherlands & Belgium (1 winner)

  • Ajax

Scandinavian (1 winner)

  • FC København

Flag of Scotland Scotland (3 winners)

  • Celtic x2
  • Rangers

Flag of Spain Spain (7 winners)

  • Barcelona x2
  • Real Madrid x4
  • Sevilla

Flag of Turkey Turkey (1 winner)

  • Galatasaray

I won’t go into all of the stats of which is the most successful club side, most successful national league etc within the SMFA Cup as you can see this from the information yourself, however, I will say that it is nice to see clubs like Galatasaray, Sporting, UNAM etc lifting the trophy.

It also appears that your chances are more slim in lifting the prestigious SMFA Cup if you are a non-European club.  As I said earlier does this mean that it is harder to lift the prestigious SMFA Cup if you are a non-European club?

its luck of the draw really. there are more european teams in gold championships meaning there is a bigger chance for them to lift the trophies. so the stats really are in order

I have taken over Tecos de la AUG yesturday evening in GC21, and personally would relish the challenge of winning the SMFA Champions Cup with them. I think that it is easier to win the cup with a european team but still isnt impossible for non europeans to win it! Its all about the man in charge of the team.

could be the first mexican team to win on friday then in gc22 lol

I’d say it is a little harder as the squad’s are generally not as good as English/Spanish etc

But as Tomus said it depends who’s in charge ;)

the interest for those clubs is lower and probably this the reason because I don’t see why a club like America ,UNAM or Sao Paulo can’t win this trophy for more than one time .

The top European clubs are superior to those in America (in terms of ratings), and the top American sides (Sao Paulo, Chivas, Boca, etc) would only be a mid-table team in England, Italy or Spain (again, in terms of ratings), so it would obviously be more difficult to win it from America.

    Inter quite successful. :O

A few missed off there, that I saw in the other message (about the Roll of Honour), most noticeably Kobenhavn and another Ajax.

I personally think SM should start creating a new GC format soon. No big changes, but I think it would be cool with the old leagues back in, like Belgium, Romania, Uruguay, Croatia, etc all having leagues in it, and then 2 sides - American and European. Each would have their own SMFA Cup, call it east and west or W/E (like the JPT for League 1 and 2 in England, but they have North and South), and then the two winners play off for the SMFA Cup proper (similar to the World Club Cup in a way). This would make it more interesting, and would give American clubs a better chance.

I don’t doubt it’s tougher - alof the best players arfe in Europe - that’s just a fact, but properly managed and with a bit of luck I think it’s possible - as has been proven!

There is not one american club in the top 30-40 of SM
PSV should be in division 2 replaced by valencia in World Championships

Depends Really, if you leave your side to get NMF by not doing tatics then your screwed but if you rest your side and play fit players you can go far, i’m currently in the Semi-Final of the GC23 SMFA Cup with my Lyon i play Werder Bremen on Friday as well as Zenit And Atletico Madrid, Not the 4 sides you expect but i bet we did tatics and rested our team unlike the big 10 who probably didnt, you can have all the best players in the world but if you dont do tatics then your screwed. : P

Depends really, if u hav a gd coach ahead of a team, either it be a big team or a not so gd team totally depends on the coach priorities, a lil bit of luck on schedule, excelent tactical skill, nd thts all u need 2 win it, as every competicion, the only diference is that u hav maybe 30 top coachs inside a GC, u hav 2 be prepared 2 counter those speacial coachs, so always check their background if u dunt no who they r.

i just find it a little unfair that lets say a person with chicago fire wins the american league and qualifies for the smfa cup. but once they qualify they get drawn in a group with sporting ajax and man.u even though they might be an amazing manager they will have to be very lucky to reach the knock outs as a team with 84 rated players cant breally compete with a team of 90 rated players

That’s football Alex! I don’t think Cluj & Anothorsis can really compete with Chelsea & Inter but that is the way of the world

It is obviously going to be more difficult with non-european club (actually its just difficult winning it with a club outside germany, england, italy or spain’s top teams). Just look at the stats! Hats off to the guy who won it with UNAM and also the guy who won it with FC Kopenhagen (an even bigger achievement given how bad their squad is). I think one reason for this, aside from the obvious better squads etc is that it is harder to get into SMFA comps from the leagues outside the big european ones. I mean, if u rest your players and save the best for the SMFA cup/shield then your league performance will suffer and it is highly unlikely to get back in next season because there are barely and qualifying places available (unless you have an easy league of course). So you have to go for league to get in again next season or cup/shield and not get in again. And even if u go for the cup, most teams in it will be better than you anyway so you probs still wont get very far

I think it is harder when ur an English club, i find Inter Milan win the cup a lot, Ive lost twice to them now once in the final and once in the knock-out stages they then go on to win the whole thing, suprise, suprise….

  • 14. Charlie bird  |  December 12th, 2008 at 9:40 pm

of course its gonna be harder!if it started at england, itll spread around quickly, the further u go from england the worse the teams.(well except the rest of britain maybe they were 2 busy plying rugby???)

it depends who’s in charge , like portsmouth won the fa cup who would of thought but harry redknapp was in charge and he was a great manasger and he did his bit to get them there tbh. so its all about who’s in charge of the club.
